When Should You Book a Newborn Photographer?
Finding out you're expecting comes with a long list of things to organise. There are scans, appointments, baby showers, nursery planning, and countless decisions to make before your little one arrives.

Newborn photography is often one of those things that gets pushed down the list. Ironically, it's also one of the few things that can't simply be booked after your baby is born.

If preserving these first fleeting days is important to you, the best time to book your newborn photographer is usually during your second trimester or early in your third trimester—well before your due date.

Booking ahead doesn't mean committing to an exact day. Instead, it means reserving space around your baby's expected arrival so your photographer can adjust once your little one decides to make their entrance.
Why You Should Book Before Your Baby Arrives
Many parents assume they'll organise newborn photos once they're home from hospital. In reality, those first weeks are wonderfully unpredictable. Your baby may arrive early. You may have a longer hospital stay than expected. Feeding routines are still being established. Sleep becomes fragmented. Simple tasks suddenly feel much bigger than they did just a few weeks earlier.

The last thing most new parents want to be doing during those first days is searching for photographers who still have availability. Booking during pregnancy means one less thing to think about when your baby arrives. Once your little one is here, all you need to do is send a quick message to confirm the birth, and your session can be scheduled within the ideal timeframe.
When Is the Ideal Time to Book?
For most families, I recommend booking around 20–32 weeks of pregnancy.
This gives you plenty of time to:

-
Research photographers whose style genuinely resonates with you.
-
Secure availability around your due date.
-
Plan your wardrobe without rushing.
-
Ask questions before baby arrives.
-
Feel organised before the busier final weeks of pregnancy.
If you're expecting twins—or know there's a higher likelihood of an earlier birth—booking even earlier is worthwhile.
Around 16–24 weeks is ideal for multiples.
Why Waiting Can Mean Missing Out
Unlike larger photography studios that photograph multiple newborns every day, I intentionally keep my calendar limited. Newborn sessions are unhurried, baby-led experiences that require flexibility around feeding, settling and cuddles. Because of this, I only accept a small number of newborn bookings each week.

That allows me to keep space available around due dates rather than filling my calendar months in advance with fixed appointments. If you wait until your baby has already arrived, availability can become much more limited—particularly during busy seasons.
What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that booking means choosing an exact session date months in advance.
It doesn't. Instead, I reserve your estimated due date.

Once your baby is born, we'll simply confirm a suitable day, usually within the first two weeks. Whether your little one arrives a fortnight early or decides to keep everyone waiting, your booking moves with your baby.
Babies aren't known for following calendars. Many arrive after their due date, and that's completely expected.
Because newborn sessions are booked around due dates rather than fixed birthdays, there is flexibility built into the schedule.

Your session is confirmed once your baby has safely arrived, giving you one less thing to worry about.
Is There an Ideal Age for Newborn Photos?
Many families have heard that newborn photos "must" happen within the first week. While the earliest days can be wonderful for those sleepy curled-up poses, it's certainly not the only opportunity.

Generally, sessions during the first 5–14 days often provide the greatest flexibility for a variety of images, but beautiful newborn photographs can absolutely be created beyond this window too. Every baby is different.

Rather than chasing perfection, my focus is on creating photographs that feel calm, natural and authentic to your family.
If you do have an older newborn, just expect the session may have a few more feeding/settling interruptions and less perfect sleepy poses. We may also be a bit more limited with prop choices based on baby's size and what is safe/appropriate. For example, baby in a bucket is generally reserved for the youngest newborns - however a moses basket is ideal for older ones.

Why Booking Early Gives You More Choice
Booking ahead isn't just about securing a date. It also gives you time to thoughtfully prepare your experience.
You can:
-
Browse the client wardrobe.
-
Coordinate outfits for the whole family.
-
Discuss colours and styling.
-
Plan sibling photographs.
-
Decide whether you'd prefer a studio or in-home session.
-
Ask any questions without feeling rushed.
Having these decisions made before your third trimester becomes more physically demanding often makes the entire experience feel much more relaxed.
If you're unsure what to wear, I've created a detailed Family Style Guide to help you choose clothing that photographs beautifully without feeling overstyled.

Consider Creating a Baby Shower Photo Registry

Many parents create registries for prams, cots and nappies. Very few think to include professional photographs.
Yet long after the bassinet has been packed away and the tiny clothes no longer fit, your photographs become one of the few lasting reminders of this chapter.
If friends and family ask whether you'd like gift ideas for your baby shower, consider asking for contributions towards your newborn photography session - I can help set up a registry with QR code link for you.

It allows loved ones to give something that becomes part of your family's history rather than another item that may only be used for a few months.
Should You Book Maternity and Newborn Photos Together?
If you're already planning newborn photographs, it's worth considering maternity photos at the same time.

Many families love documenting both the anticipation and the arrival of their baby as part of one connected story.

Maternity sessions are typically photographed between 32 and 36 weeks, when your bump is beautifully defined but you're usually still comfortable enough to move naturally.

What About Fresh 48 Photography?
Some parents want to document those first quiet hours before leaving hospital. Fresh 48 sessions capture your baby's very first stretches, cuddles, tiny details and introductions while everything is still wonderfully new.

These sessions beautifully complement a newborn session rather than replacing it. If you're curious about the difference, you can learn more here:
